Where Did All the Water Go
Published in Hardcover by Tidewater Pub (December, 1998)
Average review score:

Where Did All the Water Go? is a mystery!I live with my mom & dad on Herring Bay on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. One morning, all I could see was mud! When I asked my parent where did all the water go, they said not to worry, the water would be back. My dad thinks the wind has pushed the water away. I imagine the wind blowing all the water across the Bay. I think of where all the water went.
What a long day it was at school, I couldn't stop thinking about how all my friends, the fish & the birds who would perish without the water & the school bell couldn't come soon enough. What would I find when the school bus dropped me off at the Bay? Would the water still be far away?
With David Aiken's enchanting & whimsical artwork, Carolyn Stearns has written an informative & exciting little book about the comings & goings of salt water bays. Delightful & a keeper! Do check out my full review & many others of neat children's books.
Delightful/thoughtful/very readable/beautifully illustratedChildhood is the most wonderful time of discovery -- of the world and of self. Author Carolyn Stearns evokes this sense of wonder -- and concern -- that all children (and most adults) feel when their world suddenly changes dramatically and they don't know why. The story is about a true natural phenomenon that occurs once in a while on the Chesapeake Bay -- that cosmic wonder! -- when the tides and the wind and the moon and other weather factors are just right. Surprise, consternation, a sense of loss, fear, worry, skepticism, reassurance from wise and understanding parents, joy and renewed faith are all a part of the story. The illustrations of David Aiken are stunning and inspired, and complement the text beautifully. This is a timeless book of spare and direct prose for children of any age, to be read to younger ones aged 2-8 and read by older ones aged 9-99. And is the storyteller a girl or a boy?

The Winemaker's Marsh: Four Seasons in a Restored Wetland
Published in Hardcover by Sierra Club Books (13 November, 2001)
Average review score:

Love this book!I received this book as a gift, and it's become a permanent fixture on our living room table. The photos are spectacular, as is writing by Ken Brower,a knowledgeable and highly respected environmental writer.
I grew up in the SF Bay Area, and it was uplifting to read about how Sam Sebastiani has restored the wetlands on his vineyard. I wish all of the wine growers in California were as responsible stewards of the land!

I would highly recommend this book - and it would make a great gift!
Great with Fowl!Proof that our heroes are all around us. Stunning photographs affirm that we can save this planet from ourselves. The results of one person's efforts are reproduced in a neat, coffee table format that shows how even a mere 100 acre marsh (a former hay field!) can be transformed into a life-sustaining ecosytem that supports a diverse number of species. As in many of Ansel Adams photographs that encompass the reflection of the small landscape within the larger one--Michael Sewell has illustrated the importance of the "small place" as an ecological bell-weather of the greater environment. He proves that determined individual efforts do pay off, and gives us hope for the future. Text by the Browers, Father & Son, heighten this moving, life-affirming experience. Inspiring!

Abandoned: The Story of the Greely Arctic Expedition 1881-1884
Published in Paperback by Univ of Alaska Pr (July, 2001)
Average review score:

A gripping, true life accountIn Abandoned, Alden Todd tells the complete story of the Greely Arctic Expedition (1881-1884) which was launched as part of the United State's participation in the first International Polar Year. Commanded by Adolphus W. Greely, the expedition consisted of twenty-five volunteers who went to what is now Ellesmere Island in the Canadian High Arctic. The men were left to endure short rations and unbroken isolation at their icy base when the first ship to resupply them in 1882 was forced to turn back. The second relief ship (sent in 1883) was crushed in the ice. In 1884, the six survivors of the original twenty-five man crew were finally rescued and brought home. The national excitement of their return was scandalized as rumors of cannibalism during their dreadful, final winter became supported by grisly evidence of cannibalism. Abandoned is a gripping, true life account and history of men battling for their very lives as they are pitted against the elements and each other. Out of print for more than forty years, this University of Alaska Press trade paperback edition is also available in hardcover [...] and highly recommended, dramatic reading.

State of the PracticeThe volume contains a timely and well balanced overview of the state of the practice in understanding and managing agricultural phosphorous. Alone in the Night: Lighthouses of Georgian Bay, Manitoulin Island and the North Channel with Video
Published in Paperback by Lynx Images (December, 1998)
Average review score:

An outstanding contributionPart I of the book (Lighthouse Basics) deals with such questions as why the lighthouses were built, what they look (or looked) like, who kept them, and how they worked. It then goes on to describe more than 60 lighthouses, many of which disappeared long ago. The book contains a large number of old photos depicting the lighthouses as well as people associated with them, along with historical notes and anecdotes. A truly outstanding contribution to the history of lighthouses in Canada.
